Until about ten years ago it was still possible to describe Mursi as an entirely oral culture. In the late 1990s, however, the missionary organisation SIM started an informal 'Mursi pilot education project' which proved very effective in helping a small group of Mursi, living at Makki in the Mago valley, to read and write their own language.
