Introduction

The 1950s cover the period from 1950 to 1959. Events in 1950s had economic and cultural influence on society of America. In the decade of 1950, the dispute between the two different axes world intensified dramatically with the Korean War and the subsequent division into two independent states. America changes with each passing decade. History is gathered by those who bear witness to it, and those who conduct research into a past they have never known. Americans remember the 1950's as a time when appearances were everything (Stoner, 2008). Morality and theological integrity were still considered essential qualities.

Extramarital affairs were quite scandalous, even though a shocking amount of married men reported cheating on their wives in an anonymous poll. The population increased by an estimated thirty million from 1950 to 1960, truly an astounding rate. Highlights of the decade include harsh and sexist double standards, the baby boom of 1953, and the start of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union which would last for nearly forty four years. One can never fully understand the 50's unless he or she was alive during such a time. The 1950's were and idealistic, but quite naive, period of time. Criticizing the government was not tolerated, so there was very little criticism of the character and direction of American society until the mid of the 1960's (Marsden, 2007). During 1950s many issues were kept hidden and many social offenses were never spoken of.

Economic Development

America in the 1950s experienced economic growth. The society has spread consumerism. During the Korean War and early Cold War political climate in the country became more conservative. Throughout the 1950s, both unemployment and inflation remained low. The fear of communism led to the spread of anti-communism, which is expressed in the political life in the form of McCarthyism. In 1952, he was elected president of World War II hero Dwight Eisenhower. With the launch in 1957, the first Soviet Sputnik Cold War entered a new phase and began the space race (Marling, 2006).
