United States went through great changes during 1820-1830s which caused many changes in American Culture. The nation which was comprised of underdeveloped farmers, changed into an urbanized one. Such changes were not only evident in the industrial sphere but were also shown in the literary works of that time. For transcendentalists, the emerging knowledge was beyond the common perceptions. Philosophers and essayist such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson and poet Walt Whitman fought for independence and self-reliance. They argued against slavery and advocate the liberty of men on the same grounds. The abolitionists of that time include Susan B. Antony, William Lloyd Garrison, and Frederic Douglass. The works of John Greenleaf Whittier, Louisa May Alcott and Henry Longfellow presented the new character of developing nation (King and Napp, 2005).
Literature of that time also saw a new trend called Early American Romanticism which was represented by James Cooper, Washington Irving, Brayent, and Kennedy. They used to write on theme such as War of independence, the development of the new nation and the life of Indians. Artistic works of John Vanderlyn and John Trumbull are considered to be huge contribution to the American history and were used in decorating the Capitol in Washington. The American pictorial artistic also started using landscape painting as their primary genre, for example, artistic works of Thomas Cole shows the virgin nature of the north (King and Napp, 2005).
