Slavery, in the nineteenth century, was one of the major issues in the United States. The movement of Abolition remained very controversial and it did divide the country into much different school of thoughts. The people who were in favor of the abolition stated that it would bring progress in the country and encourage better relationship of southern parts with the North. Moreover, the slaves were mostly the African American Blacks, who were contributing a lot in the development of the country.
Many leaders proposed to pass a law from the US congress so that slavery could be abolished forever from the face of United States. The thirteenth amendment made the ground for the abolition. Some of the leaders also started the movement to convince the government for the abolition. They, through literature, media and public gatherings tried to create awareness about the hazardous effects of slavery in the United States. Thomas Jefferson and the Benjamin Franklin were the prominent leaders who remained instrumental in the abolition movement (American History, 2013).

Temperance Movement
Started by John Edger, it is a social movement which demanded the restricted use of alcohol and other alcoholic drinks. They also pressurized the government to formulate legal laws to ban these kinds of drinks. In 1898, another movement started, the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association by James Cullen. He was a Catholic from Ireland and spread to other communities which used to speak English (American History, 2013). Public Education
