Jamestown was first permanently settled English colony in North America . The settlement took place in 1607. In the early years, under the supervision of the Virginia Company of London, standing colony was none of the original goals. It was a route to explore the riches of the Orient to convert Native Americans to Christianity, to find gold and silver, and large quantities of goods to export to England. Instead, the settlement was in the early days of battles with the Indians, with the outbreak of diseases and an ongoing shortage of food.
On 30th July 1619, the first General Assembly of Virginia was held in Jamestown, becoming the first legislative assembly of citizens in the history of the United States. In 1624, the Company managed by the Virginia colony was known as a transformed colony. In 1699, the seat of government from Jamestown to Williamsburg was laid (Bateman, 1999).
In terms of the American founding myth Jamestown today is largely of the memory of the Mayflower in 1620 in Plymouth. The remains of the original Jamestown settlement are now part of Colonial National Historical Park.
