Introduction

James, Bill, Guy and Gilad, (2012), wrote in their book that NFC is a new technology that allows users to pay with their phones by making them forget about money cash and credit cards. NFC stands for Near Field Communication (developed by Philips, Nokia and Sony), is a networking technology, radio frequency that allows bidirectional communication between electronic devices in short-range and therefore only works at close range, up to a maximum of 10 centimeters. Matas, Luque, and Nieto, (2009), mentioned that the interesting fact is that the technology can be integrated into the SIM card, thus allowing telecom operators to enter the NFC services directly on the card. To make payments, users need a smartphone with NFC chip and the integration of credit card (or prepaid cards) on their mobile devices. To pay by mobile phone, therefore, serves on the one hand and on other smartphone designed a contactless POS also equipped with NFC chip. The two devices must be located at a distance of 4 cm so that the transaction can be performed (Cavoukian, 2012).

DiscussionSimilar Existing Technologies

The similar technologies to NFC are radio communications such as Bluetooth. The NFC technology is based on the combination of smart card - contactless and joining techniques. She works in a frequency range of 13.56 MHz and has a data transfer rate of up to 424 Kbit / s over a distance of only ten centimeters. This is required so that the contact can be taken as consent to a transaction (Cavoukian, 2012).

What are the Salient Features of the Technology

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a technology based on the set of standards for smart phones and other similar devices for developing radio communication with each other by bringing them close mostly at a distance of few centimeters or by touching them together. Present and anticipated applications involve data exchange, contactless transactions and simplified setup of some more complicated communications like Wi-Fi. Communication is also possible between an NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip, known as "tag". It is stated by Enrique, (2008) that NFC standards cover data exchange formats and communications protocols based on existing radio-frequency identification (RFID) standards such as FeliCa and ISO/IEC 14443 and ISO/IEC 18092. It also involves standards that are defined by the NFC Forum, founded in 2004 by Sony, Nokia and Philips. NFC is promoted and certified by Forum. The new service offers quick and secure mobile payment, particularly for busy people who do not have much time.

Contrast and Compare it to Other Similar Technologies

The communication between NFC-enabled devices can be both active-passive and active-active (peer-to-peer), unlike the conventional contactless technology in this frequency range (only active-passive). Therefore, a connection to the NFC RFID -world represent NFC is mostly compatible with widely used smart card infrastructure based on ISO / IEC 14443 -A (eg, NXP's MIFARE technology) and ISO / IEC 14443 -B (mainly in French-speaking countries) as well as Sony's FeliCa card (eg Octopus card in Hong Kong), which are used for electronic ticketing in public transport and payment applications. Due to the extremely short range of NFC is not a competitor ...
