Third-party Payer's Point of View

From the perspective of the third-party payer, it is evident what the advantages of the gatekeeper system are. It is common for patients to lodge angry complaints about the high cost of healthcare services that they are charged. Most patients feel helpless in front of doctors and are unable to control the expenses that they may be forced to incur at the hospital because they are virtually at the mercy of the physician. However, in the case of the gatekeeper system, the patient does not have to worry about paying an exorbitant fee for healthcare services. This is because the physicians involved in the delivery of healthcare act more responsibly when deciding on the services that are to be offered to the patient. They are especially careful about taking into consideration the cost of the healthcare services and make sure they do not run very high. As a result, the patient does not have to worry about having to pay an exorbitant fee at the end of the treatment. Another advantage of the gatekeeper system for the third-party payer is that they know that the physician will do his best to make the best decisions for him in terms of selecting the appropriate healthcare series to suit his needs.

However, a possible disadvantage of the gatekeeper system from the point of view of the third-party payer is that the physician is likely to focus too much on the provision of cheap healthcare services to the patient even if it means that the quality of the healthcare services will be compromised. This means that he may select a cheaper option every time, even if the health condition of the patient demands that he be administered with an expensive healthcare service.
