Aging population has increased dramatically over the past two centuries. Living longer is an achievement in itself. The combination of increased aging population and lower fertility lead to aging of the population. The rate of aging is different between countries, being faster in developed economies and particularly strong in continental Europe and Australia. The economic policy makers are primarily interested in the challenges that these trends pose to public finances. The consequences, in terms of public expenditure with aging, could be severe.
