Literacy Conventions and Useful Themes

Literacy conventions can be defined on the basis of being natural view of the most traditional literacy works. The literacy convention is not only used for the understanding of simple or concise meaning from the excerpt; rather it provides an in-depth and profound study of the literature. This enables readers to extract more relevant information from the literature and makes the readers divulge into the endless horizons. A number of literacy convection, as well as core themes, are present within the assigned literature for in-depth review. Although, most of the literacy conventions were introduced within the storytelling for strengthening the arguments related to lay the foundation for discussion of African American literature and its reflections on the social, geopolitical and thematic inferences.

The first literature selected is a part of the book called “African American Literature as a Spiritual Witness” by Yolanda Pierce (2009). In this paper, the author has used several literary conventions and themes to explain the role of Margaret Walker in African American Literature. The literature convention is comparative in which the author had used the literature work of Miss Margaret. He justified that the African American literature had never modified its trend and is yet based on spiritual truths. In the first part of the literature, the author has given the arguments and used the poetic proves to justify the current and traditions modes of literature. Pierce used the word “haunted” while comparing the African American Literature with its birth place. He said that the African American literature produces both the contestation and acceptance of its Christian as well as African origins.

In the Second part of the article, Pierce has described a brief biography of Margaret Walker. He used the words “Margaret was the daughter of a Methodist Minister and a grand daughter of a slave” (p. 234). In these words, he didn`t only described her biography but also argued later that the African American truth of slavery was well experienced and was a topic of motivation from her performance. The next section of the paper has used the original terms of her poem and used it to narrate the African American literature. Three stanzas from the volume named “My people”, have been used and described the spiritual contrast and the practice of slavery. The narration of the slavery has been a reflective context in this poem.
