Affirmative action

Affirmative action is the commitments made by federal state to comply with equal employment opportunity without any kind of discrimination. Organizations should consider their employees and identify areas of discrimination such as women and minorities. They should also create action plans to eliminate the discrimination of women and minorities and make effort to implement such plans.

Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination against persons with certain characteristics or conditions. These protected characteristics or conditions include age, disability, gender or sex, marital status, national origin, race and military situation of the people concerned. The principles of affirmative action require organizations to promote equal employment opportunity and eliminate discrimination. The purpose of affirmative action in employment is to permit fair right to use employment opportunities and working to create communities which closely reflect the demographics of skilled workforce (Bennett, Hartman, 2007). Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) is statistical and narrative. The statistical information includes the organizational profile, analysis of the working groups, analysis of staff availability, utilization analysis and analysis of staff performance. The narrative information includes, identifying critical areas, action-oriented programs, internal inspections and information systems. The AAP is used to identify areas of certain minorities facilitating improvement. It develops and implements programs of action to correct and identify problems and achieve goals and objectives.

Elements of Affirmative Action

Affirmative action is related tier the equality in workplace related to training apprenticeships, compensation, termination and goals, layoff, promotion and hiring. This plan helps in implementing equal opportunities for disadvantaged individuals or group. These individuals are discriminated as a result of religion, color, race, creed, disability, sex, age or marital status and ethnic origin. These programs re implemented in order to improve workplace environment and ensure that there is no discrimination in the workplace. Federal Employment Equity Act is related to enforcement of equity. Legislation in this regard demands the accountability of the employee's who belong to minority group. Employees should be equally treated at all levels in their organization. The 13th amendment in according to the constitution has made slavery legal. In addition President John F Kennedy also focused on the implementation of affirmative action plan (KPA, 2010).

Title VII requirements

Affirmative action plan is also applied to private and public sectors and it also relates to Title VII requirement of the Equal Employment Opportunity for blacks, minorities, Hispanics, women all should be represented equally in any sector whether its education, business or employment. This was not the case in past. Many laws relate to private employees and other are associated to employment agencies, public sector employees and educational institutions. These laws are not based on the number of employees working at the company and the number of employees present in each location.
