Abstract

MEMS (Micro electromechanical systems) include micro technology and embedded circuits on printed circuit boards (PCB). Micro technology is defined as small circuits used in different application to increase performance efficiency. ADXL345 triple access accelerometer breakout module is an example of micro technology. It utilizes 3 axis sensors and ADC to send the signal in digital format. It works on electronic sensors, ADC, and digital filters. This paper utilizes the different sources from internet and books to analyze the functions of accelerometer.

Introduction

It is device used to measure acceleration forces. The forces can be dynamic (caused by vibrating or moving the accelerometer), could be static like steady gravity force of pulling the footsteps. MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) are a micro system technology which utilizes SMD IC's and microchips to manufacture the circuit (Pang, 2013). ADXL345 triple access accelerometer technology utilizes the ADC in order to transfer analog signals in digital form.

Breakout module is also attached with the accelerometer circuitry (Rogel et.al, 2013). The module was composed to support breakout module that transfer analog signals of ADXL345 (more ports can be attached), however the board diagram is grove module that can fix it favorable like others circuit boards. The sensor consolidates 3.3 and 5v force supply.

Prior Work

It is necessary to do some theoretical work on other accelerometer before start work on project. ADXL345 is a 3 axis accelerometer used in many applications like smart meters, asset tracking applications, home appliances, and remote and gaming controls by means of auto sleep/ auto on mode in order to increases the efficiency of the device (Pang, 2013). It is also used in many industrial applications.

Other models of triple axis accelerometer like ADXL335, ADXL346, and ADXL343 are also used in different applications. These accelerometers are simple low cost and robust. Some accelerometers are also available with the function of auto shutdown. It increases the efficiency and battery timing of the device.

Theory

The ADXL345 is a low power, small, and thin 3-axis accelerometer include high resolution (13-bit) dimension at up to ±16 g. Output data which is digital is formatted as 16-bit twos complement and is available in the course of either a I2C digital interface or SPI (4 or 3 wire). This model ADXL345 is used to calculate the stationary gravity acceleration in tilt detection applications, as well as motion or shocks are the result of dynamic acceleration (Rogel et.al, 2013).

It is due to its high resolution (4 mg/LSB) facilitate inclination changes measurement less than 1.0°. Many unusual sensing functions are provided in this accelerometer. Inactivity and activity sensing identify the lack or presence of motion and it also detects if the any axis acceleration exceeds from a level set by user. Tap sensing function detects double and single taps.
