Psychosocial Impact of Adolescent Pregnancy on the Family

Introduction

Ethically, adolescent pregnancy is troubling the society of the developed countries. The world of today is not a secure palce for such population which is vulnerable. Adolescent pregnant girls are at high danger for depair, abuse and disease. Teenage girls are not able to protect their interest because of childishness. These teenage pregnant girls are exposed to potential harm, economicallt impoverished and unprotected by rights. Unplanned pregnancy creates many issues that are unethical and are very difficult to resolve. Adolescent pregnancy affects the entire family's health.

Adolescent pregnancy is the critical and very serious issue that the society of Canada is facing. It is developing and growing nationally as well as internationally. According to some surveys, it has come forward that this problem has become the major problem in the society which has become difficult to prevent. There are many issues that arise because of the teenage pregnancy. Mostly adolescent pregnant women are disadvantaged socio-economically. According to the research, it has been observed that women who became pregnant in their teenage mostly face physical issues. Most adolescent pregnant girls face the risk of delivering the birth of premature babies or they give birth to respiratory distressed children.

Apart from medical and socioeconomic issues of adolescent pregnancy, it has been observed that adolescent pregnant girls suffer from some psychological disturbances. Depression becomes the major issue of teenage pregnant girls. Many studies have shown self esteem, social support, high depression level, relationship issues and loneliness issues among teenage mothers (Sodi, 2009).

Discussion

There has been decline in Canada in the rate of teenage pregnancy since 70's but many provinces of Canada are facing dramatic increment in teenage pregnancy in the recent years. Specialists are pointing out the tough socio-economic climate in the local spikes as a main factor. The national rate has been increased from 27.9 teenage pregnant girls out of 1000 teen girls to 28.2 teenage pregnant girls out of 1000 teen girls. Increment in the rate of teenage pregnancies has been observed in between the period of the year 2006 & 2010. Adolescent motherhood rates in the age of between 15 to 19 years have been reached to 36 % in Newfoundland, 15 % in Manitoba, 17 % in Nova Scotia and 40 % in New Brunswick (Bielski, 2013).

Mental health and physical risks occur in adolescent motherhood according to several studies. Following are some consequences of adolescent pregnancy.

There is the need of the development of the women's body that will be able to accommodate a growing child. Many problems will be imposed for both the baby and mother if the body of mother is underdeveloped. A teenager comes under the category of physically underdeveloped body therefore it can have adverse affects on the health of mother and her baby. Premature births, low birth weight and pre-eclampsia are the major issues of adolescent pregnancy (Sodi, 2009).
