Assessments are a formative approach (not summative) because its purpose is to improve the quality of student learning, not to provide evidence for evaluating or grading student. Classroom learning gains a sense of purpose and self-worth in order to be active participants. It is an ongoing process that provides opportunity for improvement in student learning and promotes the development of critical thinking skills as students learn to assess their own learning.
