Tourism industry plays a vital role in the country's economic development, besides providing hundreds and thousands of local employment opportunities. Despite the increasing tourism business, Thailand has been facing problems with respects to tourism management. There is a strong need to identify the industry's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats so that the government regulates and promotes the industry in a meaningful and fruitful manner. Introduction
Tourism has developed into the world economy as a very important and dynamic sector, particularly for developing countries. Its growth has consequences not only to the activities associated with tourism (especially in the private sector) but also to other sectors, such as transport. It enables the creation of jobs for varying levels, professional and unskilled, and, routinely excluded from the labor market, such as women. In some developing countries, tourism is already an important and dynamic sector and will continue in other countries. The possibilities of this phenomenon are to use, but it is also necessary to ensure that the sector does not develop in an uncontrolled manner threatening the natural environment and the social and cultural life of the country. Uncontrolled development of the sector could threaten its long-term development.
Background of the tourism industry
The tourism industry, which has grown to meet the needs of all the travelers, is unusual because of its size and structure, with a number of components playing a part. It consists of all the commercial and non-commercial enterprises and agencies which make tourism possible. Collectively, they form a network made up of inputs from a series of individual industries, rather than a discrete and homogenous industry, and some of the participants may have customers who are not tourists such as excursionists and local residents. Core industry sectors are tourism administration and development, passenger transportation, hospitality, attractions, tour operation and retail travel.
