Academic Honesty and its Importance

Academic honesty simply means avoiding any kind of cheating in the course of formal academic exercise. The cheating might include deception, plagiarism, fabrication, bribery, sabotaging, and personating. Plagiarism is the use of ideas or word of another writer(s) or creator without properly acknowledging the source. Plagiarism is a serious crime in the domain of professional, ethical and academic integrity. Plagiarism is sometimes akin to theft and robbery. Deception pertains to providing information which is not true. The false excuse of not completing paper or work on time is also deception and comes under academic dishonesty. Another issue is reporting false data, and/or citation (s), this is called fabrication. Giving bribe for taking answers is also against academic honesty. Personating is assuming another student's identity to provide an advantage to that student.

Students these days are tech savvy and are well familiar with the blessings of internet. There are many website which provide not only wide range of information but also prepare assignments on variety of topics (Welch, 2006). The key word “Term Papers for sale” produces more than fifteen million results on Google alone (AAC 2006). These websites are sometimes offering it for free and sometimes it costs them to copy. However, in both the cases, the information put as it is and without reference to author in proper manner, it is considered cheating and academic dishonesty.

Academic honesty is of prime importance in all educational and professional domains with regards to ethics and regulations.
