Discussion

It has been said by Dostoyevsky that “the degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.” This quote determines that prisons play a major role in explaining the level of civilization in a country. This is because studying the crime rate in a country enables us to know about the literacy rate as well as the civilization. People tend to commit crimes when they are illiterate of when they are unemployed.

Abu Ghraib

In 2004, human rights got badly violated in form of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse that included torture, rape, and homicide of the prisoners who were imprisoned in Abu Ghraib prison which is located Iraq. Another name for the prison is Baghdad Correctional Facility. The military police personnel of the United States Army together with additional US governmental agencies committed acts which were extremely heart throbbing. History of American prisons has revealed that the US society was much uncivilized mainly because of physical, physiological abuse and mental abuse. In the previous years, the condition of the American prisons was extremely worse, and this is because the prisoners were treated very badly because of the torture they received. This tells us that the society was highly uncivilized and there was no importance of humans in prisons. Similarly, even at Abu Ghraib, the Iraqi prisoners were treated badly since they were beaten; they were given electric shocks, exposed to heat and confined in solitary. Moreover, they were also raped and murdered by guards as well as the other prisoners on the instructions of the guards. Sexual humiliation was also common and prisoners were also tortured psychologically and physically. Besides this, strip searches were also conducted and this also included painful examination of the body parts which was a daily routine in the Iraqi prisons (DeParle, pp.1).
