The main purpose of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive in-depth analysis on the prevalence of smoking in the nation of Saudi Arabia and its most likely determinants. Cigarette smoking is thought to be one of the most crucial and dangerous problem for health and it is considered to be the main cause of high mortality around the world (Bernhard, 2011, p. 25). This is a pressing problem which is easily prohibited. In Saudi Arabia, tobacco intake or cigarette smoking is legally prohibited, perhaps owing to the Islamic perspectives that have been presented along with the health-related issues. As Islam strictly forbids any substance that is harmful to the health of an individual, smoking has been considered unlawful and illegal. And yet, the rate of smoking is growing in Saudi Arabia, and this paper discusses the prevalence and determinants of smoking in Saudi Arabia.
Prevalence of Smoking in Saudi Arabia
Introduction
Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to health, but in order to quit smoking, it is not easy for those who are chain smokers and are addicted to smoking. We have to admit that smoking caused various diseases and has become a major threat to human health. Smoking has become a trend and fashion for teenagers and adults, and is affecting the environment and human health to a great deal. Every smoker knows the effects and implications of engaging in this destructive behavior but somehow feels unable to alienate himself from this life threatening weakness (Eysenck, n.d.).
The use of tobacco causes severe health diseases and even it also leads to death. It is a slow poison which affects the major body functions slowly and gradually. Every year more than 150,000 Americans got admitted in the hospitals and the reason is extensive smoking issues. On the other hand, more than 20,000 became the prey of smoking activities and died. Therefore, in order to breakdown this chain, smoking cessation is important before it's too late (Van Zundert, Ferguson, et. al., p. 226-34).
Discussion
It is common knowledge that most smokers have tried to quit this dangerous habit at least once. Every smoker knows the effects and implications of engaging in this destructive behavior but somehow feels unable to alienate himself from this life threatening weakness. From among the people who have tried to quit smoking, many fail initially and many resume the habit sometime later in their lives. From among those fortunate people who actually do manage to quit on their own, willpower and resilience are two of the most important traits. This characteristic cannot be attributed to people who have been forced to quit by external factors such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases or other major eventualities (Carmody, Duncan, Simon, et. al., p. 811).
To draw viable conclusions from the phenomena of quitting smoking, it is imperative that the functions of the brain and its structural aspects are studied. There is sufficient evidence to believe that the behavior and motivation of quitting smoking is directly related to the functions of the ...
