Legal & Illegal Usage of Drugs

Introduction

Presently, drugs can be found everywhere and it many people are attracted by the excitement or escape that drugs seem to offer. However, it is essential for drug consumers to understand about legal and illegal drugs and its usage.

People are experimenting with drugs for many reasons. Most drugs are used first out of curiosity, either to have a good time, or as friends do, or to improve athletic performance or mitigate another problem, such as stress, anxiety or depression. Usage of drugs does not involuntarily make a person addictive to drugs. Also, the level of transferring of a person from relax person to addictive consumer cannot be determined as there is no specific level (Campbell 2004: pp. 283-285). It has been seen that consumers continue to use drugs after experimenting with them because of the fact that these drugs either make them happy or prevent them from feeling depressed. Similarly, there is a thin line between normal or usual usage of drugs and its addiction. As only few drug addicts are recognized when they cross the line. While the frequency of drug usage does not constitute addiction, they could also be indications of drug issues.

Many psychotropic drugs are marketable, such as benzodiazepines, antidepressants and some opioids. It is in the case when they are used not as intended, such as chronic overdose, which is known as the harmful use (colloquially drug abuse) (Crandal: pp. 19-25). Drug use is often referred to as an attempt for self-medication, especially in the case of an existing or emerging illness. In this paper, we will be discussing about drugs and the legal and illegal usage of drugs to understand that how people perceive about drug usage and what makes a drug legal or illegal.
