Abortions

Introduction

Abortion has been a very controversial subject over these past few decades. Every time you pick up a paper or magazine it seems there is always some protest regarding abortion, whether it be for fetal rights or women's rights. An abortion may occur unexpectedly, in which case it is called a miscarriage, or it may be brought on purposefully, in which case it is often called an induced abortion. In this report three types of audiences are being addressed generalist to generalist, generalist to specialist and specialist to specialist. The various controversies and opinions surrounding it are also discussed. It opens with the fundamental description of abortion and goes on to clarify the diverse technique of abortion in a summary fashion.

Generalist to Generalist

The term "abortion" actually refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced as in a surgical or medical abortion. The Oxford dictionary defines abortion as “the throwing out of a fetus from the womb previous to it is able to endure independently”. In medical terminology, Abortion relates to the premature removal of a fetus .The term is fairly common in our world today and women are choosing abortion as a way of dealing with unwanted pregnancies or family planning (Cozic, 31-33).

The two characteristics underlying the process are of Pro-Choice and Pro-life. "Through Pro-choice, the state allows women the complete authority to have an abortion with no legal interference. Whereas in Pro-life, the embryo is regarded as a human being with certain legal rights and abortion is considered equal to murder (Wennberg, 71-72)."

The types of abortion practices can be generally summarized into two categories, based on the time and procedures adopted.

Medical abortion is a means to end pregnancy devoid of surgery. Surgical Abortion on the other hand, can be generally categorized into two methods: early surgical abortions and mid-trimester abortions. Both are depended on the period of the pregnancy including from the first day of the preceding menstrual period. The process is carried on by a surgical procedure called vacuum aspiration.

It is difficult to categorize Abortion as a sin or a legal right since two points of view regarding the subject have always prevailed, i.e. those in favor and those against it. The only distinguishing characteristic to choose either side would be to consider the conditions under which the embryo is conceived or removed.

Specialist to Specialist

There have been arguments against this particular medical practice since the early ages. Now, that the expertise has paved a clearer depiction of the practices concerned and the risks inherited, we are at a much better location to look at these influences.

Opponents to abortion raise the controversial issue of whether the fetus feels any pain during abortion. Changes in heart rate and fetal movement suggest that intrauterine manipulations are painful to the fetus (Lewis, 57-58).
