Abortion is a serious ethical issue, a debate on this topic enters into political and law enforcement side. The question is should abortion be termed as murder of a human life or it is the legal right of a female available on her own will? Behind such debates related to abortion there are many fundamental ethical issues which always require specific attention as well as consideration. The law says that the importance must be given to the legislation and morality and a good law is always based upon ethical and moral values (Overall, 2012).

Discussing abortion as an ethical issue involves the rights and legal status of the fetus. If the law considers fetus as a human life then abortion is a murder and it must be termed as illegal. Fetus is also linked to women's body and is considered as a part of her autonomy when she conceives until the baby is born; this does not even imply that abortion is ethically allowed. There are many states which do not force women to carry pregnancies against their will but still the argument continues on the ethical choices (Singh et.al, 2009).

Abortion is a difficult issue to handle in terms of political and religious implications. The dimensions of the ethical issues over abortion are widespread over a range of arguments and concepts to follow. A point of conflict arises when people mix the two different entities together. A decision made on the religious grounds must not be confused with the political and legal front. Abortion is critical issue because pregnancy is the result of sexual activity in which man and woman are equally responsible (Overall, 2012). The ethical issues related to the abortion must also include the ethics related to the sex and the partners involving in this activity. One of the consequences of sexual activity is pregnancy, therefore some religions and beliefs also state that it is unethical to prevent the consequences either by contraception or abortion. Modern thoughts have now been diverted to open sex and methods of prevention with more liberty. For this reason it has now become important to consider abortion as a serious ethical issue. For some people the answer to the ethical question follows religious values and beliefs. If people willingly accept the decision based on their own perspectives and with a positive impact than this debate will progress and reach a reasonable conclusion (Shaw, 2010).

According to The Abortion Act 1967, lawfully the abortions can only be conducted by registered medical practitioner. This means that only registered doctors and health care practitioner can perform abortion and excludes the midwives and nurses who are registered practitioners (Linton, 2009). Nurses face a number of ethical issues irrespective of their area of expertise and regardless where they work.
