"Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by loss or destruction of the fetus before birth." The arguments on the topic of abortion are creating a complex situation in the world. Both sides have their firm augments. Those who believe that abortion is an act of killing and should be forbidden are considered as pro-life while those who base their arguments on women's right to an abortion are known as pro-choice. Abortion is certainly an act of murdering your own blood. A society cannot be more inhumane and atrocious who kills its own helpless feeble child and call it as their right. The most ironic part is that when many governments, despite knowing the truths, call it as a freedom of choice and legalize this brutal act. According to Pope Benedict XVI, “The fundamental human right, the presupposition of every other right, is the right to life itself. Abortion, consequently, cannot be a human right - it is the very opposite” (Reuters, pp1).
Arguments In favor of Abortion
A person in favor of Abortion talks about women's right. Their viewpoint is that abortion is ethical and legal because it should be kept up to the mother, whether she wants to keep a child in her womb and what she decides to do with her own body. Abortion facilitates women to take their own decision. Women who are not mentally prepared for a child should not be forced to have one. This will not only disturb the life of the mother but it is the child who will be the greater sufferer.
Another argument that is being presented in favor of abortion is that it is the most solution for parents who are planning for their child but discover that the child has high chances of being born with a deformity, disorder or any other disease. They present the point that since no parents can see their child growing with any disability, abortion will not only bring ease to their life but it will also save the child from a lifetime disgrace and suffering (Asch, pp 64).
Abortion also Facilitates in controlling the number of children a family wishes to afford economically and emotionally. Parents do have financial strains, and bearing the expenses of a newborn can be unbearable burden to the family.
Unmarried pregnant mothers are mostly not in a state to bring up their child in a family less environment. In most of the cases, an unmarried pregnant girl is a student or in the starting phase of her professional career. Bringing up a child in that age and condition will have negative consequences on the child, mother and on society and since the unmarried mothers also have to face in terms of social values, abortion is the best option. Some argue that a teenage girl can neither holds responsibility to bring up a child nor does she has the financial resources to do that, hence be provided with the option of abortion (Burns, Gene, pp. 121).
