Abortion

Introduction

Few decades ago, when the abortion was illegal, thousands of women used to die because they mostly never want to bear a child and attempted to kill the child by themselves or with some unprofessional approach. After the year 1973, Supreme Court allowed women to have choice whether they can have abortion or not. Due to this reason, thousands of women are saved (Kellough, 33). Abortion can save women's lives and therefore it should remain legal in United States.

Discussion and Analysis

From a historical perspective, the purpose of abortion has been undoubtedly to act as a life saver for both child and mother. In the two decades before abortion was legal in the United States has been estimated that about one million women per year underwent illegal abortions. In the process, thousands of women died and thousands more were maimed. Whenever a society outlaw abortions, leads to women seeking abortions in alleys where they become negative, outrageous, and stains. Therefore, to protect the lives of women, we must keep abortion legal in the U.S. According to the statistics of abortion in the Alan Guttmacher Institute, about 15,000 women have abortions each year, and who becomes pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Fortunately, the nation's leaders were able to stop this slaughter of women (Kessler, 99).

In Roe v. Wade, a landmark Supreme Court decision in 1973, said a woman and her doctor is free to decide to abort a pregnancy during the first quarter, state governments can restrict access to abortion after the first trimester with laws intended to protect health of women and abortion after fetal viability must be available if the woman's health or life at risk. In other situations, state governments have the right to prohibit abortions. Abortion, therefore, is authorized within the United States because the court decided to preserve the right to choose an abortion as a constitutionally protected liberty.

The argument of abortion has been raging since the Supreme Court case, Roe vs. Wade in 1973. This case has divided the country into two camps: pro-abortion and pro-life. Pro-life advocates argue that abortions are murder and extreme levels of child abuse. While pro-abortion advocates believe that abortions are a justifiable means to end pregnancies. The argument for abortion is that the fetus is not yet a human being and their rights should not override the mother (Kellough, 78).

An emphasis on what defines a human being is very important. It is a human being the result of sperm to fertilize an egg? At the moment of conception a human being is composed of a single cell with a unique DNA structure. Single cell kill this would be a mistake, however not one cell is for one person? If man is defined as having a certain level of self-awareness and recognition of his person, then the fetus is not yet a human being for abortion would be as immoral as the destruction of a malignant tumor (Shrage, 127).
