Abortion means to terminate a pregnancy. It deals with situations where the conscious and willing make a decision of life or death Abortion as a debate is often seen as a fetus's right to life or woman's right to avoid giving life. Either way, we must consider the embryology (the study of fetal development) and acknowledge where the fetus is in development when making this decision. Abortion has become a worldwide debated ethical issue. Social and ethical issues depend on the geographical area, culture, religion and sometimes wealth. One question prevails above all others, “should the rights and concerns of women or the rights and concerns of the fetus be taken into consideration?”Throughout a variety of ethical arguments we can conclude with two main arguments, pro choice and pro life. With pro choice, defenders believe the fetus is only a potential human when it becomes viable (able to survive outside the womb), and with pro life the fetus is a human from the time of conception giving it a right to life the moment each individual cell begins to multiple. As an ethical approach, I will examine abortion through deontology.
Deontology roots from the Greek word Deon, which means duty. Its approach to ethical decisions states, “To do one's duty and not be afraid of the consequences because the consequences derive from the individual's motive for action”. Relating this to our argument on abortion, you can see that some may have to make the ultimate decision not because they want to but because it is their duty. You can also say that their motives on such a decision are either good or bad which will determine if it is ethically correct.
Discussion
Religious Debate
In this debate my stance will be pro life, however I will be discussing the point of pro choice too as I will present my case. As I begin my debate I will firstly describe the religious point of view on this ethical matter. According to all religions is it Christianity or Islam or Buddhism or Hinduism abortion is considered as a matter of life and death. All human beings on this Earth have their life controls in the hands of God, and we as human beings have no right to kill another human being even if he or she is not born. In this perspective, the pro choice activists have no stance as no one likes to speak against the religion. However, they do raise a debatable point that fetus cannot be considered a human being (Lassieur, 2001).
Case of Pro choice
The case presented by pro choice activists signifies the point that they encourage abortion not generally but in some specific cases. The cases where they signify that abortion should be allowed is when child abuse happens, a rape case is witnessed, due to high poverty, high population and if the expected child has serious disabilities. The other case which they present is that people do still practice abortion illegally, and this kind of abortion puts the women's ...
