A Raisin in the Sun; Brief summary

Characters in Lorraine Hansberrys play are very significant in understanding play. Characters are examples of they way Lorraine lived day by day her live when she was the kid. Success of play was brought out by characters and her way of keeping our interest with each one of them. They characters are very critical in understanding play (Hansberry Nemiroff 61-73). There were four main characters that made play the sellout, Lena, Ruth, Beneatha and Walter Lee. Each one of these characters had the dream to try to accomplish. Characters portray plays meaning in way play evolved into the masterpiece.

Lorraine Hansberry studied African history while working on THE Raisin in Sun. She incorporated her knowledge of history and wanted to bring it over in to her play. Beneatha the character in THE Raisin in Sun knows much about her African past. Mama is very proud of her African heritage and believing its importance. During stage directing of play Lena has noble bearings of women of heroes of Southwest Africa, but she totally ignores her African past and does not care much about it either (Hansberry Nemiroff 61-73). Asagai Beneathas acquaintance talks allot about his African past and believe deeply in his culture and heritage. He is from Nigeria where there is the lot of poverty.

THE Raisin in Sun is the quiet celebration of black family importance of African roots, equality of women, vulnerability of marriage, true value of money, survival of individual and nature of mans dreams (Hansberry Nemiroff 61-73).

Africa is the great part of play because it brings out good and humorous elements in Younger family, such as Walter yelling out Hot Damn! Flaming Spear! As Beneatha walks out in her Nigerian robes (Hansberry Nemiroff 61-73) Africa becomes the symbol of heritage and the troublesome but hopeful future.

With help of Paul Robeson, W.E.B Dubois and Frederick Douglass she created play THE Raisin in Sun. Paul Robeson was the famous baritone singer. He inspired her to write THE Raisin in Sun. She loved his voice and songs he sang. Hansberry learned from him way that most blacks lived, and dangers of being an artist (Hansberry Nemiroff 61-73).
