Abstract

In this research paper, the ethical implication on the nurses implied through the standard code of ethics. A case study has been discussed to define a scenario in which an action of the nurse is decided whether it is according to the professional practice or not. While practicing a nurse has to ensure following ethical aspects to respect the client as an individual, to obtain consent before treatment, co-operate with others in the team, act to identify and minimize the risk to patients and clients, be trustworthy and maintain professional knowledge and competence.

A nursing profession is bound by many ethical and legal aspects. According to the described case study, the action of the nurse Mary Rose Robaczynki was following the standard ethical code or not.

Introduction

In a professional environment, there are some legal and ethical codes designed to monitor the actions of the working professional. There codes and standard work as guidelines in situations that occur in daily life. During professional dealing a nurse has to respect the client as an individual, to obtain consent before treatment, co-operate with others in the team, act to identify and minimize the risk to patients and clients, be trustworthy and maintain professional knowledge and competence.

A registered nurse is accountable for own personal practice. There are some standard set for the professional guidance of nurses according to which they have fulfill their duty according to ethical obligation. Some aspect of the standard code of ethics relevant to the case study discussed below:

Respect the Client as an Individual:

The role of a patient or clients should be recognized and respected, a nurse has to serve as a partner in recognizing and caring about the contribution they can make to improve the condition of partner. It is the duty of the nurse to identify the preference of the patient regarding respect and care which should not go beyond the limit of existing, resources, goals, legislation and professional practice in relationship of therapy. It is the personal responsibility of the nurse to be accountable to protect and promote the dignity and interest of client and patients, regardless of age, gender, race, ability, economic status, sexuality, culture, lifestyle, and political or religious belief. There should be a professional boundary maintained between the patient and nurse. It also includes assisting the individual in gaining social and health care, support and information that it relevant to the requirement of the patient. In case of any conscientious objective that may be pertaining to professional practice, it should be reported at earliest to the designated authority or supervisor. A nurse should continue to practice provide services to the best of abilities with the best professional judgment until there is an implementation of alternate arrangements (NMC, 2008).
