Health care is a highly interactive process, where the nurses and other health care providers have to develop a personalized relation with the patients. The adversities experienced by the patients can also have an influence on the health care providers. The element of caregiver grief is a significant dilemma faced by the personnel in the contemporary health care industry. The modern health care industry has placed several challenges on the healthcare providers, as their job descriptions have been significantly altered. Not only do they have a very challenging work schedule, which exerts physical pressures on these individuals; they also have to cope with the immense psychological pressures. As these health care providers have the responsibility to form a direct contact with the patients and deal with their relatives who are accompanying them in the hospitals, their responsibilities must also include consoling the patients. This process can prove to be a very difficult task for these individuals, and combined with the physical aspects of the job; the healthcare providers may go on to develop serious medical conditions that will lead to burnout.
The main dilemma in this process is that the physical stress experienced by these people can be alleviated, through a period of rest; however the psychological stress experienced by them, can cause long term implications. Caring for patients who are very near to death is a very traumatic experience, where the caregivers experience sadness, depression and anxiety (Waldrop, 2007). This is a normal condition among majority of the health care providers, as they are affected by the death of the patients. If these psychological pressures are not adequately handled by the health care providers, they may lead to several catastrophic repercussions, which will have on impact on their entire life span. The hospital and clinic authorities must ensure that the care givers are given the adequate aid to cope with the psychological pressures, with the help of certified grief teams (Brosche, 2007).
