Introduction

Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" was published 4 December 1879. The play is essentially about the relationship between Nora and Helmer and how they get to live together. "A Doll's House" was in a kvinneemanipasjonens kamptid, at a time when discussion about the position of women in society was a standing issue in the public debate. The main plot is about the married couple Nora and Torvald Helmer. Nora is a housewife and Torvald has just got a new job as a bank manager. Nora lives in an unrealistic world, her father and Torvald has treated her like a little child, but she would prove she could make use of himself and borrowed a lot of money dishonestly in order to save Torvald, who did not even know he was sick. Now past her and obtained the truth threatens to emerge.

Discussion

A Doll's House is the first Norwegian works based on the bourgeoisie in a tragedy.
