Abstract

The following paper will deal with the meaning of the statement written by Taurel Tatcher Ulrich in her legendary book, “A Midwife's Tale: the Life of Martha Ballard”. This book will also be reviewed and compared by other books of the same likings namely “Negotiating Conquest: Gender and Power in California” and Sojourner Truth, a Life, a Symbol. Furthermore, the evidences used by the authors of each of these three books will be discussed and how these evidences differ from each other yet convey the same message of women's freedom. Last but not least, the role of women in the current society and in the old century will also be focused with full contrast ((n, 1785).

Introduction

Throughout history, women were and are considered as a lesser sex. Especially in religions like Islam and Hinduism, where the role of a woman is just to take care of the family and nothing more. Some religions encourage women to get out of their homes and strive for education and learn new things and some religions don't. Because of this thinking and religions, the women are made to live under harsh rules and not fully enjoy the meaning of freedom.

Throughout history, many writers touched this topic with their bold books, poems and writing. However, one of the most remarkable books that deal with the role of women and how they are subjected is “A Midwife's Tale: the Life of Martha Ballard” written by Taurel Tatcher Ulrich. This book deals with situations and events that the midwife in the eighteenth century faced which includes medical practices, religious rivalries and sexual themes (/talesofridiculousness, 2010).

However, the following paper will deal with the statement of this book that is “Without documents there are no history and women left very few documents behind.” And what this statement is actually trying to convey. Furthermore, this book will also be compared and contrasted with the other book that also deals with the role of women in the society of the history. The books that will be used to compare and contrast are namely “Negotiating Conquest” written by Miroslava Chavez-Garcia, and “Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbol” written by Nell Painter (/talesofridiculousness, 2010).
