A Behavior Intervention Plan

A Behavior Intervention Plan

Introduction

Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA) is always used to assess the students with an emotional disability. There are a number of assessment procedures that are used while carrying out FBA. The case presented below illustrates a behavior intervention plan of a student with significant problem behavior of creating noise or comment without permission of the instructor that disturbs the whole class along with the teacher. The student of eighth grade, Edward, has the precious record of four years in the same problem. The behavior was noted and helped out by the counselor, but Edward did not show significant improvement (Iwata, 1995).

The case of Edward presented here, is an example showing the use of direct and indirect descriptive FBA processes. The end result of the case study is a systematic comprehension of the student's negative behavior and all the variables contributing to the trigger of behavior. The problem of Edward was not identified with definitive functions, so functional analysis is not recommended after completing the behavioral assessment. As a behavior analyst, the complete set of information will be provided to the requesting party in the planning meeting (Iwata, 1995).

Purpose of FBA

Functional Behavior Assessment is a series of test which are conducted to judge different behaviors shown by the children. It does not look at the behaviors in terms of their effects on others. According to FBA, behavior is a child's attempt to adjust him in a particular situation. The purpose of FBA is to gather information that allow the psychologists and the educators to understand that behavior and how to bring improvement in the child so that he stops to show that behavior which is creating hindrance in his mental and physical development.

In more simple words, FBA aims at collecting information to help decide the reason behind the problematic behavior which ultimately makes the base of the early intervention plan to remedy the behavior. FBA defines behavior, what triggers it, and identifies possible assessment in the end. After the careful study of the problem through FBA, an intervention plan is formulated which is aimed to bring change in the situations which trigger the behavior, and counsel to promote healthy ways to meet the individual's needs (O'Neill, 1997).

Referral

St. Anthony School is the main school of the region and has a big team of counselors for the students who are in special needs. The students, who have emotional disabilities, are mostly assessed here and provided with the best possible behavioral intervention plan. The case of Edward came to the team through his class teacher. The team contacted with the behavior analyst who designed a comprehensive intervention plan for bringing improvement in his behavior.

Hence, the counseling team was unable to solve Edward's problem, a referral was done and a professional behavioral analyst was hired to address the problem. The analyst has a a vast experience in dealing such cases. In the formal meeting, behavioral analyst, Edward's parents along with the school counseling team ...
