Introduction

Workplace violence refers to all the activities that create violence at the workplace. These violent activities originate from the employers and employees and in return, affect the employees and employers at the workplace. Workplace violence also includes the activities where people are threatened, assaulted and abused in any situating relating to the work. These violent activities also become a challenge to the safety, health and well being of the people involved in the workplace. In today's era, workplace violence is an emerging challenge to all businesses and various workplaces because these activities lead to various challenges to the safety and well being of workers at the workplace. It is very important to take specific actions to prevent workplace violence (Bowie, 2005). Some of the core causes and corrective actions to prevent workplace violence in retail business are discussed as follows.

Risks in the Retail Business

Retail business is basically businesses in which goods and products are purchased from other businesses and individuals and provided to the end users. My business is a small retail department store which has 85 employees employed. All employees in my business have to interact with the public daily to conduct various business activities. There are a number of risks involved in my retail business because employees interact with different kind of people during the activities of retail business.

The significant risks that are involved in my business are the risk of robbery. This happens because our store is at a public place and robbery is prevailing in today's world. This activity is in practice and robbers break out in stores and conduct the act of robbery. Another risk in our retail business is the risk of shoplifting. Sometimes, people are caught lifting things form the store with the intent of robbing those items form the store. Another risk involved in our business is the risk of dealing with abusive and difficult customers. These are the most significant risks involved in our retail business.

There are some prominent factors which increase the probability of occurring these risks in our retail business. It is the requirement of our retail business to keep cash on hand and display tempting items in the store. Two other factors involve keeping the store open for extra hours and employing a large number of young people in our workforce.
