This paper discusses, what work life balance is, and provides a business case for and against implementing work life balance initiatives. Today many of the people say that, “work life balance is increasingly used as a strategy to attract and retain employees”. We will be analyzing how the work life balance is useful to attract employees and how organizations are using this technique to motivate their employees. The paper will also discuss the effects of implementing Work life balance in an organization.
The term work-life balance is a state in which work and private life are in harmony. The term educational work-life balance comes from the English: labor (work) life (life), equilibrium (balance). Critical to note is that the concept contained implicit assumption that (professional) work ("work") and something else is passing away from life ("life"). Profession is possibly also several professional activities at the same time, family, social activities, leisure and many more (Reich, 2001: 84). It should be understood as different aspects of life ("life domains") that should be kept in balance ("life-domains balance"). It is possible not to hand disability (less "life-domains conflict") and support ideally each other (high "life-domains facilitation"). The term work-life balance (and balance life-domains) is also used for the effort to reach such a state of equilibrium and maintain. Which equilibrium is characterized by the use of this term remains widely open. It may for example be interpreted as a certain distribution of time used to achieve a balanced subjective prioritization of areas of life, that is, with the distribution of time to be satisfied on both areas of life. It is also often understood as the absence of a mutual or negative influence between the spheres of life (life-domains conflicts), while positive mutual influences (life-domains facilitation) has so far paid little attention (Reich, 2001: 86).
Interest in the Topic
The work-life balance has become a topic of interest in the business world. Today it is observed that many employees are getting involved and expect to make their work and life balance. The topic of work-life balance is for the individual depending on age and life situation, a different focus, also depending on the individual response to the meaning of life and their own conception of happiness (Dex & McCulloch, 1997: 36). For other persons as the compensation is for work by Leisure and Sport in the foreground, the use of social, cultural or political area or the opportunity for a sabbatical as a long sabbatical, ensuring stages of recovery, a working time reduction at the end of working life or time for the maintenance of health. Some people think in terms of greater freedom for social time and personal commitment to their time commitment to paid work deliberately limited. By type of simple-living -life-style can be a restriction of personal consumption, allowing a greater independence of paid work.
