CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

We live in a drug culture, from morning when we take caffeine or tefillin, to breakfast, till night, when we can relax or go home with an alcoholic aperitif. This culture is apparent when we sleep with a sleeping pill prescribed by the doctor, or when we are using different substances, which affect the central nervous system (Coffee), to meet these vicissitudes of everyday life. Even when drugs were present in all cultures and all times, now more people who use drugs, and there is much easier to get. When conducting a survey and asked about the biggest problems in today's society, it always gets named in the top 5 in the "drug problem".

Drug addiction and everything associated with it makes a huge loss of money to those who are against this, especially for states who must fight them in many ways at once. To carry out this work we rely on bibliographic research methodology, and some interviews that helped us to realize how big this problem. We work much more extensive than initially thought, but to us we went much guided by the theoretical framework that we set or, it was almost laughable to reduce it more, because if we did, this work was finished work as a college student and not 5 college students.

Previous research to the final work is very important to us and we left many questions, and learned many new things as well try to make each piece of work was backed and supported by written material, and literature. The research aims at understanding the reasons why adults of the age 18 to 65 in an area of Cardiff consume alcohol and illegal class “A” drugs. The main motivation for undertaking this project is to gain an insight into some of the reasons behind why both men and women misuse substances such as Alcohol/ illegal class A drugs; for instance, Heroin, Cocaine, Esctacy and Lsd. By providing medical intervention and support, many of the individuals could eventually be weaned off the methadone substitute which would enable both men and women to live a drug free life (Board on Behavioural, 2004, pp.7-8). However, I felt that the assessment process itself did not explore in any depth or detail the reasons behind why individuals began misusing substances in the first place. It is for this reason I am interested in exploring some of the reasons behind why many individuals in the Newport area may misuse the mentioned substances (Wekesser, C. 1994, pp. 42).
