CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
This research study will be conducted in order to explore the personal reasons and circumstances that motivate the individuals to pursue social work as a profession. An understanding of the reasons why students or professionals have chosen to work with a particular population is imperative as these factors are reflected in their work and in their personal life. This willingness to listen openly and sincerely is a quality that a student or professional in this field must be willing to attend to as a major commitment of their careers. Such an assertion, however, may seem perplexing or even duplicitous to some (Fowers & Richardso, 1996, p. 609).
Frank (1996), for example, argued that the types of employment people generally chose in the labor market were based on innately selfish human needs rather than moral considerations. After Frank: asked participants in his study to "consider to what extent a job or career would have to satisfy each particular requirement before you would consider it ideal," (p. 23), however, he found that both students and business executives tended to put ethics and moral obligations before profitability, thus calling into question the author's initial presumption about people and the motives underlying their career choices (Quinones & Teachout, 1995, p. 887).
