CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Indian automobile industry went for a new journey in 1991 for opening up 100% FDI through developing an automatic route. Since that time many global industries have set up their facilities in India and have helped in increasing the level of production from 2 million in 1991 to 10 million in 2006. This expansion has helped the middle class industry to increase its purchasing power and the strong growth of economy over past years. Many manufacturers have invested in the Indian market making business. This has resulted in the increase in decline in tax and income rates, increased the income level and has also helped in increasing personal disposable income (Alice, 2009, p. 67). The change in the mindset of individuals has led to changing investment and increased the customers and growth in communication and has also led to the urbanization of customer's attitudes and increased their propensity to consume. As a result, the increase in disposable income and fast changing habits have led to increased consumer habits and increased consumers of capital good production for human comfort and ease.
Research Questions
This study aims to answer the following research questions:
What are the factors of growth in automobile industry?
What are the features of passenger car industry in India?
What is the impact of growing automobile industry on employment in India?
Significance of the Study
For any country the automobile sector reflects the health of its economy. In response to this, the Indian economy is in a very good condition as the automobile industry in Indian economy has expanded and remarkable growth has been seen in this regard. The automobile industry in India has grown by 12% in 2011-2012 by sale of 17 million units which have been demonstrated form two wheelers and light trucks. Between April 2011and February 2012 the sales growth has risen to 12.5% (Barnes, 2000, p211). As a result of this, the industry has undergone numerous developments and investments have numerical impact on the market dynamics.
