What is double consciousness

Double sentence consciousness derives from a passage in the first chapter of Du Bois The Souls of Black Folk, called "From our spiritual struggles." In this chapter, Du Bois describes how the descendants of Africans do not feel self-conscious one, but a sense of duality, of being a U.S. citizen and a Black.
