Introduction

J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur is the writer of a famous letter “What is an American?” J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur was born in Normandy where he was educated at Caen, city of Normandy. In the year 1755, he started his career as surveyor in the Colonial Militia of France. In his career as surveyor, he fought various battles. In the year 1757, during his career as surveyor, he took part in the battle of Fort George. However J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur got injured in the battle of Quebec due to which he left the army and without stating any reason for doing so he glided to New York in December of 1759. On coming back to the America, he changed his name and became J. Hector St. John. In the rest of his life, J. Hector St. John that is Crevecoeur carried on his life as an explorer, trader and surveyor. He travelled throughout the North American colonies of British. Thus he became an accepted citizen of New York Colony in the year 1765.

The letter obtained praise all over the world due to which his written letter was translated in several other languages such as English, Irish, Dutch and German. All these editions of letter were translated in the other language due to their popularity and large number of people wanted to read them thus understanding the aim of writing these letters. The Crevecoeur is considered to be first writer who explained the meaning of British question “What is American?” when it was asked on the verge of its independence. The writer set out to explain what the factors that make American a real American are. By taking into account various American beliefs, values and cultures, Crevecoeur explained the whole world as to what American encompasses.
