The story welfare brat is about the childhood of Ms. Childers and she resided in the New York City in mid of 20th century in Bronx region. She was sister of six children and in this story the sibling of Ms. Childers is also discussed in detail. The mother of Ms. Childers who was an Irish catholic woman has also been discussed in this story. In this story the family life is discussed into many contexts. The writer has discussed how families suffer due to poverty, alcoholic parents or children, physical and emotional violence and lack of family planning. Ms. Childers wanted to get educated and it was her dream to attend collage but she was not self fish. For that purpose she needed a good career and for good career she needed education. Her family didn't treat her well during her childhood, her mother and siblings were mean to her and they didn't like here but still when she grew up she loved them unconditionally and she wanted to do something good for her mother and family. She loved her siblings and cared for needs too. The book is very interesting as it presents a story of struggle. The writer has done wonders and presented the story very well. This book is well written and the whole story revolves around Ms. Chiders struggle to live in this cruel world. Although every one treats her bad, she still has a caring heart and she takes care of whoever comes to her way be it her mother or her siblings. At school children often humiliated and disgraced her but she kept her self esteem high to survive in this world.

In life there are many people who try to let you down and there are people who are always there to cheer you up. This is life and this fact of life is well explained in this book. It is hard to survive when the person who lets you down is from your family. This book is not a usual fairy tale in which the prince comes and everything becomes ok rather it is a story of a girl who saw lots of hardships in life but she still managed to survive in the world. This book is a about how to deal with poverty and other problems in life and how to survive and win in this cruel world.
