Essay 1

With the development of Web 2.0 technologies, more and more participants can access the content of a Website as both readers and authors. The relationships between these participants lead to the development of Web-based Social Networks (WBSNs), such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn etc. WBSNs provide good platforms for participants to make a Friend of a Friend (FOAF) and extend their social relationships. In addition, based on WBSNs, people can also share Web links and valuable ideas, and exchange information with each other.

Proposed Design Scenario

Before exploring the trust mechanisms in WBSNs, we first make clear the initial problem: “what is trust?” This can help people know how to describe their trust for others and propose a reasonable model to evaluate the real trust value of participants in WBSNs. In human society, trust is a subjective and complicated topic which depends on a lot of factors, such as relationships, previous experience, other people's recommendations and so on. It is also influenced by psychological, racial and cultural factors. Lots of different trust definitions have been proposed addressing different aspects.The project is to design a website to sale or rent properties.

A customer visits the website and enters their order then wait for the search results. The customer enters what he/she wants for instance location, flat or house, rant or sale, number of bedroom, price range, shared ownership … etc. then click to search if any available property meet their needs, those property will be listed on the screen with some picture. Then if the customer finds their order, he/she can contact with agent to preview the flat or the house and agree on a payment method.

J. Golbeck et al propose the criteria of WBSNs as follows. 1) WBSNs could be accessible over the web with a web browser; 2) Users of WBSNs must explicitly state their relationships with other people; 3) The WBSN system has explicit built-in support for users to make social connections, and 4) Each relationship is visible and browseable to users. D. Boyd et al propose the definition of social networking sites as “Web-based services that allow individuals to 1) construct public or semi-public profiles within a bounded system; 2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share connections; and 3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others with the system”.The business-to-consumer aspect of electronic commerce (e-commerce) is the most visible business use of the World Wide Web.
