Wayside Christian Mission

Introduction

Jefferson Community and Technical College's Melinda Floyd wants her students to understand that learning often takes place outside of the classroom. For this reason, Ms. Floyd recently brought three of her English classes for a visit to Wayside Christian Mission. During these visits, her students learned about the causes of homelessness and how Wayside Christian Mission is working to eradicate this problem in our community (Kenneth, 1996). Many of her students were surprised to learn that Hotel Louisville is entirely staffed by women and men who are either enrolled in or have graduated from one of our recovery programs. Other students were equally surprised to discover that some of their classmates are, in fact, homeless women and men participating in our College and Career Program. The College and Career Program offers our resident clients and opportunity to pursue a degree or receive specialized training that will better prepare them for the future. These classroom visits allowed Ms. Floyd's students to see first-hand how Wayside Christian Mission is combating homelessness on a number of fronts. Interestingly, many of these visiting students have since pledged their help in this cause.

Discussion

In discussion, we will be highlighting the mission, fundraising, services, and other facilities provided by the Wayside Christian Mission (Kenneth, 1996).

Mission

"Everyone has the right to social assistance. It aims to enable everyone to lead a life with human dignity. There shall be public centers for social assistance, under conditions determined by law, has the mission to provide this assistance”. This assistance is mainly hardware (guidance unit) and / or social (budget guidance via the Free Clinic, followed by aid to students based on their changing results) or psychologically before being purely financial.

Fundraising

These are made either through the provision of social integration income (formerly "minimum livelihood" or "minimum income") or through advances on unemployment benefits, family allowances, pensions, disability allowances mutual benefits or when the agency is unable to pay to fulfill its mission. Medical assistance may be, for the management of hospital costs, fees and charges associated with the purchase of pharmaceutical products or medical mutual contributions.

The granting of such aid is always conditional on a specific social investigation in order to define the state of need that justifies the request and affects those who have no resources or whose income is temporarily insufficient (Kenneth, 1996).
