The science of telecommunications studies the methods for remote transmission. Information of all kinds (words, sounds, images or data) is transferred in the form of electrical impulses or signals. Vinton (2004)says:”The AM was the first method of modulation used in telecommunications for the transmission of audio signals over the air, thus creating the radio. During the twentieth century, the telephone has become the most common form of telecommunication”.
Today it is assumed that, by pressing a few buttons, you can establish a voice connection in seconds with people on the other end of the globe. However, the technology that led to the telephone network, one of the most complex creations of the twentieth century, dates back only about a century ago. Since the invention of the telephone, occurred on the Italian Antonio Meucci and, independently, the American Alexander Graham Bell, there were many innovations that have led to the current set of telecommunications. The main stages of this process were as follows. (RFC791 2006)
In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi proved that radio waves could be used to transmit information over long distances, sending a message over the Atlantic Ocean. (The National Science Foundation 2006)
In 1910 Almon Strowger devised an automatic switching system capable of establishing a telephone communication without the intervention of an operator, setting the stage for the current telephone network.
In1948 William Shockley, John Bardeen e Walter Brattain In 1948 William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain invented the transistor, giving a big boost to the electronic revolution(Mansour,2010).
Charles Kao in 1965 formulated the theory that the information could be transmitted using optical fiber technology, which today is used to transfer large amounts of data at high speed and which constitute the backbone of global telecommunications network(Kuhn,2005).
VoIP
Kuhn(2005 ) maintains that “VoIP (Voice over IP) - a technology that enables transmission of voice via the Internet or dedicated networks using IP protocol, often used as a synonym for password, Internet telephony. While VoIP is created digital representation of voice, it is compressed and divided into packets. This packet stream is then transmitted over a network with other data.”In the receiving device the entire process is played in reverse so we get a normal voice signal. The IP network can be any packet switched network including ATM, frame really, the Internet, the network links based on TI (E1) (Vinton 2004). For VoIP communication can be carried out the necessary specialist equipment and software. Today more and more companies are involved in the production of such equipment and applications, as well as most VoIP telecommunications operators have on offer. (Keating 2008)
To build VoIP networks are used primarily
VoIP gateway - is responsible for connecting IP telephone network to other network types. Gateway must provide real-time interface between various formats and procedures for communications transmission (RFC791 ...
