Both the workforce and workplace have changed, which also changed the kind of supervisor within a workplace. Nowadays, organizations do not need to be someone who control or command but excelled in improving systems and coaching. Moreover, automation and technology have and heightened the need for knowledge front-line supervisors. Unfortunately, as a departments manager it is observed that front line supervisors who are key to process excellence and high performance are less prepared for supervision.
Discussion
Being a department manager, found that this lack is due to absence of formal appraisal system. Formal year-end appraisal review should be conducted in addition to informal periodic and ad-hoc review with employees. During the reviews, the overall performance rating that has been determined based on the performance discussed. Equal emphasis should also be placed on the behavior-based skills and task-based skills (Prowse & Prowse, 2009).

The performance appraisal system includes performance standards and definition of rating. Rating will be define on following criteria and marked on a scale of 5 to 1.
5 - Constantly exceeds all set performance standards; standard performance being rated is constantly apparent by its excellence.
4 - Constantly usually go above set or meet standard of performance; signifies above satisfactory level of performance in the standard being rated.
3 - Constantly achieves and meets set performance standards.
2 - Usually falls below set performance standards; marginal performance; performance meets only the minimum standard requirements; and employee need improvement.
