Abstract

When most people think of drinking they just think of a considerable time, but no one actually thinks of the long term affects this drug can have on your entire body. In a study, done by NIAAA (The National Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) they say abuse of alcohol long term can cause the brain to shrink which can mean anything from memory loss to being brain dead depending on the amount of alcohol consumed over the years. In this, we focus on the underage drinking that is bad for teenagers. In this paper, we will be discussing, the consequences of drinking Alcohol in a teenage.

Underage Drinking Is Bad For Teenagers

Introduction

Teenagers who start drinking will develop probable brain impairment and this causes them serious learning problems. Because the brain is still developing and its exposure to alcohol interrupts the key processes of the brain development and alcohol induced brain damage. Alcohols causes a long term and irreversible damage to their neurological development that is going on during their teenage years and continue until age 20, which can also result in them to, have a long lasting effects on intellectual capabilities.

Discussion

Alcohol affects the liver, central nervous system, and the kidneys. The liver is a very important organ in the human body; a person can only live up to 24 hours without one. The liver helps with metabolism and filtration. If a person starts drinking when they are a teen they can develop liver problems and are more susceptible to liver diseases. The kidney also is a vital organ in the body; it helps with keeping the body hydrated. Drinking too much alcohol makes the kidney not absorb as much water as they should be absorbing.

Lowering the legal drinking age would make the battle against underage drinking even harder; it will switch from just the college level to a high school problem (A lower age would be unsafe). Then high school parents and educators will have to deal with the problem, underage drinking. Alcohol on the college campus has been a problem over the years also. Charles Clark says “officials blame underage drinking for disturbing levels of campus violence and emotional problems, as well as a large portion of traffic deaths” (underage drinking) (Celia, 2000).
