Introduction

Analysis of the experience of managing national fisheries resources of the UK address the key provisions of the effective distribution and regulation of quotas (catch) aquatic biological resources in the country. It should be noted that the basis of the process of managing national fisheries resources of the leading fishing countries are based, first of all, the principles and conditions for the enjoyment of economic and social interests of population and enterprises in these countries engaged in fishing and related activities.

Fishing

The total catch in the UK was 616,000 tons in 2007, equivalent to 717 million Euros. Shellfish production through fisheries owns a 78% of the total volume in the UK. The British fishing industry has a fleet of 6,500 vessels. In 2009, fishermen caught in the UK and landed a total of 581,000 tonnes of fisheries products, worth 717 million Euros, and the aquaculture industry of 744 million Euros. This brings the total value of the British production was of 1,461 million Euros. For 2008, this represented a fall of 1% in volume and 6% growth in value. The British statistics fisheries production divided into three categories: demersal, pelagic, and shellfish / crustaceans (FAO, 2007, 173). Demersal species are the largest category with 37% (265 million) share of the total value of catches. These are followed by molluscs and crustaceans with 35% (251 million), and finally pelagic species with 28% (201 million Euros). In the past 9 years demersal species reduced their share of the total catch value. In 2000, this category owned 55% stake, molluscs and crustaceans were 31% and 15% pelagic. Additionally, the catches of demersal species was reduced 38% in the last nine years, however, from 2008 to 2009 had a small growth of 5%. Catches of pelagic species remained constant over the past year, and molluscs and crustaceans were reduced by 11% (FAO, 2007, 173).

Seafood Processing Industry

The UK has a large seafood processing industry, comprising 479 companies. Among them, a small group of large multinationals and a large number of small businesses. Large companies account for most sales. In structural terms, the processing industry comprises primary, secondary and mixed. The processing industry sales are estimated at 3,300 to 3,600 million Euros in 2007. From 2004 to 2008, the number of processing companies fell by 15% and the number of employees it did in 20%. With this, the number of people employed in industry reached 14,660 (FAO, 2007, 173).

The British-processing industry is increasingly dependent on imports for raw material supplies. Similarly, it has increased "outsourcing" or contracting out of certain processes to companies in developing countries. This is mainly shellfish species that require intensive processes of labour as cod and haddock. China is the country that is doing these processing companies serving British. This option is cheaper despite the transportation costs.

In structural terms, the UK has 6,500 fishing vessels and 432 aquaculture enterprises. The number of fishing vessels has been reduced by 17% compared to 2000. Overall, the sector employs a total of 25,000 ...
