Over the years it has been frequently heated up and argued concern on whether the United States could have came in the war sooner and hence has preserved many lives. To try to understand this we should look both at the individual's and government's point of view.

A very real "geographical Isolation" permitted the United States to "fill up the empty lands of North America free from the threat of foreign conflict" (Fires 2003 243).
