Correlation statistics are summary statistics that describe the way two or more variables are related. This information is particularly useful in the social sciences as researchers frequently need to know how one variable may affect another. The correlation statistic summarizing the relationship between these variables would, therefore, be positive; when one variable increases, so does the other. A negative correlation occurs when an increase in one variable is associated with a decrease in the other. For example, an increase in education may lead to a decrease in domestic violence (Agresti, 2007).
