Module 4: Treatment for Drug Addicts

Task 1: Brochure

Our Treatment Group

Much of the scholarship on addiction focuses on risk factors; however, given that the primary goals of prevention programming concern reducing risk factors while simultaneously enhancing protective factors, it is important to review some of the characteristics and contexts that deter individuals from abusing substances. Protective factors can lessen the impact of risk factors on the likelihood of using drugs and represent more than merely the opposite or absence of risk factors. Protective factors are often understood as interacting with risk factors. For example, a strong attachment to parents may lessen the effect of associating with drug-using peers on one's own likelihood of substance use. Supportive, affectionate families are often cited as protective against substance use and delinquency. Parents who provide opportunities and rewards for their children to engage in positive, prosocial behaviour have children who are less likely to engage in substance use and delinquent activities. This can also serve to strengthen negative attitudes toward substance use. Attachment to community members or school may buffer the effects of family conflict. Social bonding to parents, school, and community are particularly important protective factors that may operate alone or in conjunction to reduce youths' risk of substance use and abuse, as well as delinquency.

In addition to certain medications that can be used, psychotherapy is also initiated. At first it motivates the person to try to change, and then analyzes the circumstances of drug use that lead to avoidance strategies and relapse. In practical terms, this means helping the person to identify other areas of interest and pleasure, to keep a log of consumption and then to implement the withdrawal or hospitalization for the person, out of his normal environment. Furthermore, educational support and social development is essential for some people.
