Abstract

From a global point of view, wood is a vital material. According to Bowyer et al. (2007), 3.5 billion cubic meters of wood were harvested globally in 2005. A little over half was used as fuel wood, with the remainder used for round wood and industrial round wood. Fuel wood is used to create energy, while round wood and industrial round wood are used in manufacturing an array of wood products. Wood is a popular material because it is a common and renewable resource worldwide. In fact, less energy is required to produce wood materials than all other construction materials. As a result, wood materials are not only readily available, but also relatively inexpensive. Timber is increasingly being used in structural design for various reasons, including sustainability. An investigation into the current and future uses of timber in structural design, including case studies, is carried out in this dissertation.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Timber is increasingly being used in structural design for various reasons, including sustainability. An investigation into the current and future uses of timber in structural design, including case studies, is carried out.

Problem Statement

This dissertation studies the use of timber beams in structural design. It allows the comparison of timber with other structural materials such as steel and concrete in the construction and other engineering structures.

Aim of the Research

The basic aims of this research are to:

research the subject of timber design,

compare the use of timber to other structural materials.

Research Objectives

This is a research that looks into Timber as a suitable construction material and how it performs as an alternative to other construction materials. It tends to accomplish the following objectives:

An in-depth research into the current literature on the subject,

Consideration of several case studies using timber as the structural material,

Carrying out a design study using timber.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

The chapter forms the basis of the literature search and thus, a major part of the research study. It provides an in-depth explanation of the term ethics, its background, process, and implementation. It discusses the topic in a generalized manner in order to support the analysis and conclusion of the research study.
