Abstract

Tibet is generally seen as a constant conflict between Tibet and China where China has been facing accusations of invading Tibet and oppressing Tibetan people. Oppression in many societies is expressed in social discrimination, the abuse of power, injustice, and impunity of crime. Besides being ethically indefensible, it is seen that oppression is a form of violence that diminishes a person's capacity. This paper aims to explain the role of Tibet Oral History Project (TOHP) and discuss the important issues concerning this project.

Tibet Oral History Project

Introduction

The Tibet Oral History Project (TOHP) is a U.S. based non-governmental organization that consumes all efforts to protect the real history of those Tibetan people who are now living in exile (TibetOralHistory.Org, 2012). It is important to know that the Tibet Oral History Project also received approval of Dalai Lama who requested the TOHP to establish a repository of Tibetan oral history based on the experiences of old Tibetan people who were deprived of their own homeland by Chinese invaders. In fact, Dalai Lama took a deep interest in this campaign of interviews and advised the TOHP team to record interview of these affected people before their departure from this world (TibetOralHistory.Org, 2012). It can be seen that this project came into existence due to the oppression of Tibetan people by Chinese government. Therefore it is essential to understand the concept of civilization and oppression in this regard.

Civilization is a synonym for culture level. It is also a stage of social development, whereby information and religious culture develops. Apart from this, Civilization is also the set of features that characterize the evolutionary state of a given society, technical, intellectual, political and moral, without making value judgments. Whereby coming down to the criteria of a great civilization, it is noticed that all the civilization has experienced a fall and decline in their time where some decline occur slowly over time, and some are drastic and rapid.

However, oppression is the systematic mistreatment of a social group with the support structures of society oppressive. Racism, sexism, homophobia and the anti-Semitism are the examples of oppression. Oppression is a social injustice that occurs through practice, and norms by a social group. In general, social justice refers directly to the right of the poorest sections of society, especially workers and the enjoyment of social and economic human rights, known as second generation rights, of which no human being should be private. In fact, oppression is a kind of harm through which humans are unjustly, unfairly or systematically constrained by several factors. These factors oppress by reducing individual's material resources including access to health, wealth, income and their basic social as well as human rights. Therefore, it is important to establish better policies and practices so that any kind of oppression should be avoided.

The project started in 1991 when Tibet Justice Center committee met few children who left Tibet due to Chinese subjugation just because of ethnic differences.
