Introduction

The visitor (2008) is a smart and beautifully-acted movie from director and screenwriter Tom McCarthy, and for which Richard Jenkins was nominated for an Oscar (Academy Award) for his presentation as Walter Vale. The movie combines universal topics of companionship, romance and acceptance which blossom between four very exclusive persons and positions them inside a context of a freezing and soulless political system. Although the movie does have a political note, it is first and foremost an article of human connection.

There is no preaching or moralizing, instead the viewer is irresistibly drawn into the world of the individual characteristics as they first collide and then are dragged apart. The tale becomes an interweaving of inhabits, which starts with one very disconnected individual: university lecturer and widower Walter Vale. Walter is in his early 60s with a developed child, and is clinging to the gist of a lost life with his late wife, a gifted pianist. Everything round him has become a meager pretence. Life has other designs for Walter, however. When he is dispatched, contrary to his will, to NYU (New York University) to present as his own learned paper that he didn't compose, a frightening awaits. He finds a juvenile twosome dwelling in his Manhattan apartment. After the confrontation of the first meet resolves, Walter takes a instant to contemplate, mixed by the youth of Tarek (from Syria) and Zainab (from Senegal), who are possibly the identical age as his own child and the scholars in his lectures (Siegel,2009).

Discussion

Walter Vale is a widowed Connecticut College economics lecturer who inhabits an equitably solitary existence.
