The Trail of Tears

Introduction

The joined States government pledged one of the most heinous occurrences of its history by transient the exclusion proceed of 1830 that commanded to the Trail of Tears which was the relocation and demoralization of the American Indians. The Indians were compelled to move west in a mass escape so that the American settlers could extend to grow and prosper in their newly taken up country. The most notable of those forced from their homeland by the U.S. government were the Five Civilized Tribes of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole. The Five Civilized Tribes made up the most of the 60,000 Indians propelled west. These tribes were differentiated from the other Indian populations because of their association and forms of leadership. They had social schemes based on ownership of house, established schools and governmental agencies much like those in Europe. The tribes in many cases even adopted European dress and nomenclature, which in the eyes of the U.S. government made them more civilized, but not civilized sufficient to be their neighbors.

Overview

Between 1785 and 1902 twenty-five treaties were marked with white men to give up their tribal lands. The Cherokee would find themselves in a nightmare for the next year. In 1838 General Winfield Scott got tired of delaying this longer than the 2 years he remained currently so he took ascribe in assembling the Cherokee. The Cherokee were taken from their homes and their belongings. The were put in retaining bivouacs so no one would escape. The Cherokee were to be moved in the drop of 1838. The excursion did not happen in October, 1838 because of awful weather. They were now presumed to move 13,000 Cherokee in the jump of 1839 a distance of eight-hundred miles. The Cherokee were fed on meager rations and endured malnutrition. They were awfully clothed for the jump and numerous caught infections and died.

Many Cherokee tried to escape and some succeeded. The Cherokee knew these woodlands and knew where to go. The white men couldn't find them without the help of other Cherokee and bribes. Most of the Cherokee hid in the mountains and could not be found. During the eight-hundred mile trek numerous children and spouses were divided from their families when the Government would divide up the Cherokee into assemblies of 1,000 for alleviate of removal. About one-third of the initial Cherokee they assembled died in the holding bivouacs and between the trek from the Southeast part of the amalgamation to Indian Territory. They would have to discover a new way of life and adjust. They lost their negro slaves, and their possessions. The Cherokee were ranchers, and the land was infertile. The land was meant for beef cattle lifting, which they didn't understand ho to do. They built a capital city called Tahlequah, and their nation was announced in September 6, 1839.
